Brooks Running Technology Pages

ROLE: Creative Lead & Editor

DESIGNERS: Tiny Whale Creative

TECHNICAL ILLUSTRATOR: Monique Buster

My first major initiative at Brooks Running was to present our proprietary technologies to our customers in a clear and engaging way. I worked with the in-house Design and PR teams, as well as an outside studio and an independent technical illustrator, to create a category page and separate landing pages comprising information and illustrations that explain our tech.

Plants vs. Zombies Calendar

Plants vs. Zombies 2014 16-Month Wall Calendar

ROLE: Concepting and Writing

DESIGNERS: Leigh Beach, Chris Sheridan, Kong Lu

Among many projects for the PopCap Licensing Department was the 2014 wall calendar. Working with a team of writers and designers, we agreed on “Plants vs. Zombies vs. the Movies.” I created four fake movies for the calendar and wrote all of the fake holidays that appear each month, including Pants-Free Friday, Wash a Cat Day and Go Back to Bed Day.

Ask a Zombie

ROLE: Writer

When we began work on the company blog, we decided to have a few regular features. My idea was to write a sort of “zombie advice column.” Blog readers send in questions and the Zombie from Plants vs. Zombies answers them in a decidedly unhelpful manner. Since 2011 it has been one of the more popular features on the blog and remains my favorite project to date.

PAX East 2013 Event Booth

ROLE: Copywriter

DESIGN: Kevin Cutler

For our presence at PAX East in Boston, it was decided our booth was going to have a playful circus theme. My role was to write the various pieces of copy that would appear on the Zombie Kissing Booth, on our “free stuff” stand and on the enormous back wall, seen here, that would serve as an enticement to passers-by to come and see what all the noise was about.

Stop Zombie Mouth

ROLE: Writer

LOGO DESIGN: Emi Matsumoto

In 2012 PopCap partnered with the American Dental Association to “give fun instead of candy” for Halloween by offering free downloads of the original Plants vs. Zombies game. I created the “Stop Zombie Mouth” name and contributed a good deal of the copy that was featured on a set of collectible trading cards that were another big part of the initiative.

PopCap Games Rejected Game Ideas

ROLE: Naming

DESIGNERS: Emi Matsumoto, Lorie Ransom

Part of the challenge of updating the PopCap company blog (Blog Ride) is coming up with new posts five days a week. A recurring feature we created is a series of “Rejected Game Ideas” in which we create game names for games that do not exist and treat them as if we almost made them.

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time

ROLE: Naming and Copywriter

DESIGNER: Leigh Beach

For the most anticipated game launch in PopCap history, the team was looking for an appropriate subtitle for the game. Since it has a time-travel theme and because it was many, many years in the making, I suggested calling it “It’s About Time” though I was half-convinced they’d never go for it. Much to my delight, they loved it.

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time Trailer

ROLE: Copywriter

VIDEO PRODUCTION: Wolf & Crow

For the launch of Plants vs. Zombies 2 I, and two other writers, were asked to write “the most expensive trailer you can imagine.” After submitting multiple concepts, the team decided to go with “A Day in the Life of Crazy Dave.” The script was handed off to Wolf & Crow in Los Angeles and our most expensive trailer became a most expensive reality.

Youth Theatre NW

Youth Theatre Northwest, Mercer Island WA

ROLE: Copywriter

DESIGN: Rollin Thomas

Youth Theatre Northwest wanted a tagline that would sum up its mission to “nurture the intellectual, artistic and personal development of children through drama." I started with the fundamental theatrical skill of being able to find one's light on stage and combined it with the notion of kids finding their inner light through theater. Much to my delight, the line now appears over the front door of the theater itself.

Cranium Moolio Promotion

ROLE: Lead Editor

DESIGNER: Shawn Linder

Working with Rosenberger’s Dairies of Hatfield, PA, Cranium agreed to provide trial game experiences on milk cartons delivered to more than 650 elementary schools on the east coast. I served as Lead Editor on the project, working with the in-house design team to adapt existing Cranium content to fit on a milk carton.

Cranium Cadoo Rebrand

ROLE: Copywriter

DESIGNER: Shawn Linder

As part of a rebranding effort, Cranium released a series of its existing games with new packaging. I wrote new copy for the Cadoo box including the hard-won “kid-tastic” on the front (the marketing manager thought it was too “hard to read” but I was able to bring her around) and the character dialogue on the back.

Cranium Code Crackers

ROLE: Writer and Editor

To build a library of content to be used in ongoing promotions, I worked with a team of freelance artists to create all-new Cranium puzzles to be used exclusively with outside partners. The example here is a series of rebus-style puzzles, known in-game as “Code Crackers.” I wrote out the answers and worked with the artists on the look of each piece.

Resume

About me

I have been working as a writer and editor in Seattle since 2002. I enjoy collaborating on projects from brainstorming to iteration to completion. I particularly enjoy working with designers and finding new ways to make words and pictures come together in unique and exciting ways.

I am open to all possibilities on a project and while I can bring singular focus to a task, I am also able to change direction quickly if it becomes necessary. I strive to create copy of which I can always be proud, but I am not afraid of merciless editing.

I am a firm believer that humor is an essential part of any working relationship. I love it when I’m right, but I also enjoy being proven wrong.
