ROLE: Copywriter

To showcase new styles of running footwear and apparel for the spring season, we created a 48-page catalog that mailed to 800,000 homes. I created page headlines and supporting copy, worked closely with the design team on layouts, and cleaned up product copy provided by the marketing team.

ROLE: Naming & Copy

For several years, Brooks re-released a series of their vintage shoe designs with updated fabrication. For the Fall 2016 releases, I was responsible for naming the collections (above) as well as writing introductory copy and doing editorial clean-up on repurposed copy for the print catalog that went to retailers.

ROLE: Writer & Script Supervisor

Twice a year Brooks releases new and updated styles, and we create product videos to go with them. Here are a few samples of videos for which I served as script writer and supervisor on shoot days. I also directed the voice talent in the recording studio and worked closely with the videographers in the editing process through completion.

Plants vs. Zombies 2014 16-Month Wall Calendar

ROLE: Concepting and Writing

Among many projects for the PopCap Licensing Department was the 2014 wall calendar. Working with a team of writers and designers, we agreed on “Plants vs. Zombies vs. the Movies.” I created four fake movies for the calendar and wrote all of the fake holidays that appear each month, including Pants-Free Friday, Wash a Cat Day and Go Back to Bed Day.

PAX East 2013 Event Booth

ROLE: Copywriter

For our presence at PAX East in Boston, it was decided our booth was going to have a playful circus theme. My role was to write the various pieces of copy that would appear on the Zombie Kissing Booth, on our “free stuff” stand and on the enormous back wall, seen here, that would serve as an enticement to passers-by to come and see what all the noise was about.

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time

ROLE: Naming and Copywriter

For the most anticipated game launch in PopCap history, the team was looking for an appropriate subtitle for the game. Since it has a time-travel theme and because it was many, many years in the making, I suggested calling it “It’s About Time” though I was half-convinced they’d never go for it. Much to my delight, they loved it.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 Trailer

For the launch of Plants vs. Zombies 2 I, and two other writers, were asked to write “the most expensive trailer you can imagine.” After submitting multiple concepts, the team decided to go with “A Day in the Life of Crazy Dave.” The script was handed off to Wolf & Crow in Los Angeles and our most expensive trailer became a most expensive reality.

Cranium Moolio Promotion

ROLE: Lead Editor

Working with Rosenberger’s Dairies of Hatfield, PA, Cranium agreed to provide trial game experiences on milk cartons delivered to more than 650 elementary schools on the east coast. I served as Lead Editor on the project, working with the in-house design team to adapt existing Cranium content to fit on a milk carton.

Cranium Cadoo Rebrand

ROLE: Copywriter

As part of a rebranding effort, Cranium released a series of its existing games with new packaging. I wrote new copy for the Cadoo box including the hard-won “kid-tastic” on the front (the marketing manager thought it was too “hard to read” but I was able to bring her around) and the character dialogue on the back.

I have been working as a writer and editor in Seattle since 2002. I enjoy collaborating on projects from brainstorming to iteration to completion. I particularly enjoy working with designers and finding new ways to make words and pictures come together in unique and exciting ways.

I am open to all possibilities on a project and while I can bring singular focus to a task, I am also able to change direction quickly if it becomes necessary. I strive to create copy of which I can always be proud, but I am not afraid of merciless editing.

I am a firm believer that humor is an essential part of any working relationship. I love it when I’m right, but I also enjoy being proven wrong.
